Child Development Advisor

My name is Nancy Turner and I am the Child Development Advisor (CDA) for A.E. Bowers. I have been here at the school for five years now and look forward to another amazing year!  I am here to offer supports to help with social emotional learning.  I offer opportunities like friendship supports, support to transition into our school, I am also in and out of many classrooms during the year to support our teachers and students with programs like Mind-up and Building Mental Wellness.

The Role of the Child Development Advisor

As the CDA I offer a planned and balanced approach to helping students feel successful and positive about school. Planned activities focus on developing social and emotional resiliency skills, with the goal of enhancing social interactions. Also helping our students build adaptable thinking skills, resiliency skills and stress management skills. As the CDA I work with the entire staff to bring opportunities and programs that support healthy relationships, develop conflict resolution and problem-solving skills. As a CDA my work with students individually, in groups or for whole class presentations.

The Child Development Advisor promotes and advocates for the development of the whole child.

Mission:

The Child Development Advisor is a collaborative resource to children, parents and staff and the community to support and enhance the healthy development of social/ emotional, behavioral and mental health competencies. The CDA works alongside students, staff, parents and outside agencies.

Services and Topics:

The CDA position has an emphasis on the social / emotional wellness of students from Kindergarten to grade 5 and offers a variety of small group sessions, in-class sessions/ workshops, individual student support and support for parents.

  • Social emotional learning
  • Stress management
  • Conflict resolution/restorative practice
  • Community/service learning
  • Coping with family changes/ divorce, loss or grief
  • New student support or transition of school support
